What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond? Difference from Natural Diamond

Lab-grown diamonds are one of the most talked-about topics in jewelry. Brands are adding them to their collections, buyers are asking for them, and jewelers are giving them their own space in the window. This article explains what a lab-grown diamond is, how it differs from a natural diamond, and what matters in jewelry production.

What is a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is grown in a controlled environment rather than underground. Chemically it is identical to a natural diamond: it is made of carbon and has the same crystal structure, hardness and brilliance. So it is not a diamond simulant but a real diamond with a different origin.

How is it made?

There are two common methods. In HPHT, carbon crystallizes under high pressure and high temperature that imitate natural formation. In CVD, a carbon-containing gas is deposited layer by layer on a small diamond seed. Stones grown by either method are then cut and polished like natural diamonds.

How does it differ from a natural diamond?

  • Origin: Natural diamonds form underground over a very long time; lab-grown diamonds are grown in a controlled environment.
  • Appearance: They cannot be told apart with the naked eye. Distinguishing them takes special instruments used by expert laboratories.
  • Budget: A lab-grown diamond of the same size and quality is usually more accessible; the same budget can buy a larger stone.
  • Grading: Both are graded by cut, color, clarity and carat.

Is it the same as zirconia or moissanite?

No. Zirconia and moissanite look like diamond but have a different structure. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. The stone used in a product must be stated clearly; in our product information we always say whether a stone is natural or lab-grown.

Is there a difference in jewelry production?

Not in production. Because the hardness is the same, lab-grown diamonds are set with the same techniques: prong, pavé, channel or bezel. Stone seats are calculated to the stone size at the CAD stage, and the mounting is made in 9, 10, 14 or 18k gold. The same model can be prepared with a natural or a lab-grown diamond; only the stone changes.

What does it mean for brands?

Lab-grown diamonds let brands offer the same design at two different levels. Demand is growing worldwide for classics such as solitaire rings, tennis bracelets, line necklaces and stud earrings. For brands adding a lab-grown line, consistent stone quality and setting craftsmanship matter most.
