Jewelry Stone Setting, Plating and Finishing

What makes a piece of jewelry feel valuable in the hand is usually the final stages: how the stones sit, how clean the surface is and how consistent the colour is. At OSKA, stone setting, plating and finishing are done in the same atelier as an integral part of manufacturing.

Stone setting

The type of setting defines both appearance and durability. Depending on the design we use:

  • Prong setting: brings the stone forward; used on solitaires and classic designs.
  • Pavé: small stones cover the surface without interruption; one of the most labour-intensive techniques.
  • Channel setting: stones are lined up between two walls; preferred on eternity and riviera designs.
  • Bezel setting: surrounds and protects the stone; common in men's jewelry and everyday pieces.

Plating

Plating sets the colour and surface resistance of a piece. Depending on the design we apply:

  • Rhodium plating: gives white gold and silver a bright, white surface.
  • Black rhodium and ruthenium plating: black rhodium or ruthenium is chosen according to the design. It gives a dark, modern look and is often used for men's jewelry, stone-set designs and two-tone pieces.
  • Gold plating: applied for colour consistency.
  • Oxidised finish: a dark or antique look that adds depth to details.

Colour tone is matched across all pieces of a collection.

Surface and finishing

  • High (mirror) polish
  • Matte and satin surfaces
  • Polished and matte surfaces combined on one piece
  • Surfaces given depth with darkened details
  • Black plating and polished metal combined on one piece for contrast

Final inspection

Before delivery, every piece is checked for stone security, scratches or porosity on the surface, working clasps and mechanisms, and dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer these services only on pieces you manufacture?

Stone setting, plating and finishing are primarily part of the designs we manufacture. For pieces made elsewhere, send us the project and we will assess it separately.

Which setting suits my design?

Stone size, how the piece will be worn and the look you want are considered together; we make our recommendation at the CAD stage.

Is black rhodium plating permanent?

Black plating is a thin layer applied to the surface. On pieces exposed to friction, such as rings and bracelets, it can wear with use over time and can be renewed. Using it on surfaces with little friction extends its life.

Can the same colour be kept across a whole collection?

Yes. Plating and surface standards are defined per collection. You can request a quotation for your project.
