Lab-Grown Diamond Earrings and Necklaces: Studs, Pendants and Rivière Guide
Stud earrings, solitaire pendants and rivière necklaces are the lab-grown diamond pieces buyers ask for most after rings and tennis bracelets. This guide covers what to look for when you buy or source them.
Diamond stud earrings
Studs are sold as a matched pair, so matching matters more than the size of a single stone. Both stones should share the same cut, colour and clarity, and sit at the same height in the setting. Popular sizes run from 0.25 ct to 2 ct total weight. Lab-grown stones let you move up a size for the same budget.
- Four-prong or six-prong settings show the most of the stone.
- Screw-back or locking backs keep valuable studs secure.
- 14k or 18k gold for fine jewelry; 925 silver with rhodium for a lower entry price.
Solitaire pendants
A solitaire pendant is a single stone on a fine chain. A bezel or four-prong setting protects the stone for daily wear, and the chain length (usually 40 to 45 cm) changes how the pendant sits. Match the chain metal and karat to the pendant.
Rivière and pavé necklaces
A rivière is a continuous line of graduated stones. Quality depends on stone matching, flexible links and a secure clasp. Pavé pieces use many small stones set close together; check that the stones are set evenly and that the surface feels smooth.
Which metal and karat?
- 925 silver: fashion pieces and accessible price points.
- 10k and 14k gold: everyday fine jewelry, especially for the US market.
- 14k and 18k gold: fine jewelry and gifts for Europe.
Certification
Centre stones above roughly 0.5 ct are normally sold with an IGI or GIA report. Smaller accent stones are matched by size, colour and clarity instead of being certified one by one.
