How Lab-Grown Diamond Jewelry Is Manufactured: From Stone to Finished Piece

Lab-grown diamond jewelry is a product where two separate production lines meet: first the stone is made, then the stone is turned into jewelry. In this article we explain both lines in plain terms. If you are curious about what a lab-grown diamond is, first take a look at our what is a lab-grown diamond article.

Producing the stone

Lab-grown diamonds are grown from a carbon source in a controlled environment. There are two common methods: HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) and CVD (chemical vapor deposition). In both, the crystal forms on a small seed crystal. The grown rough stone is then cut and polished, as with a natural diamond.

Cutting, polishing and certification

The rough stone is shaped to the desired cut (round, oval, baguette, pear and so on). Diamonds and lab-grown diamonds are delivered with GIA or IGI certificates. We explained how to read a certificate in our IGI certificate article.

Jewelry design and CAD

Once the stone is chosen, the jewelry is designed on the computer. The seat, prong structure and body suited to the stone size are drawn at this stage. If there is a reference image or drawing, the CAD team makes it ready for production. See the jewelry CAD design and prototyping page for details.

Model and casting

The design is turned into a model and cast in the chosen metal (gold or silver). After casting, the piece comes out raw; it is cleaned and shaped by hand. Where necessary, parts are joined by a welding process.

Stone setting

The lab-grown diamond is placed in its seat by the master and fixed with methods such as prong, channel or pavé. Setting directly affects the durability and appearance of the product. For techniques, see the stone setting, plating and finishing page.

Finishing and hallmark

In the last stage the surface is polished or given the desired texture, and rhodium or plating is applied if needed. A karat hallmark is stamped on every product.
