What Is an IGI Certificate? How to Read a Lab-Grown Diamond Certificate
When buying a diamond or lab-grown diamond, the certificate is the document that shows the stone's quality as assessed by an independent laboratory. IGI and GIA are well-known gemological laboratories in this field.
What information does a certificate contain?
- Carat weight
- Color grade
- Clarity grade
- Cut, polish and symmetry
- Stone shape (oval, round, emerald, cushion, etc.)
- A unique report number
Lab-grown diamond reports also state that the stone is laboratory-grown.
How is the report number verified?
Enter the report number in the verification section of the laboratory's website. The details shown must match the document and the stone in your hands.
What to check when buying
- Does the certificate number match the stone?
- Are carat, color and clarity consistent with the price?
- Is the stone securely set in the jewelry?
