How to Choose a Jewelry Manufacturer: A Checklist for B2B Buyers
For a brand, store chain or designer buying jewelry wholesale, the most critical decision is choosing the right jewelry manufacturer. The wrong choice comes back as quality problems, delays and copied designs. As a workshop producing in Istanbul's Grand Bazaar, we have collected the questions buyers should ask a manufacturer in this checklist.
1. Manufacturer or middleman?
Your first question should be: do you make the product yourselves, or do you collect it from other workshops? Working directly with the manufacturer shortens the chain for model changes, quality control and problem solving. Seeing the workshop and getting to know the masters and benches builds trust. A real manufacturer does not hesitate to invite you to the workshop; ours is in the Grand Bazaar area, and you can book an appointment to visit.
2. Metal and karat assurance
In gold jewelry, karat determines the value of the product. Ask which karats the manufacturer works with (for example 14K, 18K) and whether every product carries a karat hallmark. With us, every product carries a karat hallmark. To help with karat selection, see our gold karat guide. Our gold jewelry manufacturer page also gives information on gold production.
3. Stones and certificates
If diamonds or lab-grown diamonds will be used, ask for the stone to come with an independent laboratory certificate. Our diamonds and lab-grown diamonds are delivered with certificates such as GIA or IGI. An uncertified stone leaves you in a difficult position when selling to your customer. To understand the difference, read our lab-grown vs natural diamond comparison.
4. The sampling process
Seeing a sample before moving to series production is the start of a healthy relationship. Because making a sample takes effort, samples are paid with us; if the sample turns into an order, the amount paid is deducted from the order total. Clarify your manufacturer's sample policy up front; the cost of a "free sample" promise often shows up later in the price.
5. Design confidentiality
If you will have your own design produced, make sure the same model will not be sold to anyone else. With us, customer-specific designs are never produced for others; a non-disclosure agreement is signed if you wish. Your brand's most valuable asset is its designs, and a written guarantee protects them.
6. Production capacity and flexibility
Ask in which product groups (rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets) and with which techniques (CAD, stone setting, plating, finishing) the manufacturer works. In our workshop the process runs together, from CAD design to stone setting, surface treatments and welding. Only Panther and Melis are in ready stock; everything else is made from scratch to order. For this reason, firm figures on model, quantity and delivery plan are shared at the quotation stage; it is healthiest to settle these through a written quote rather than advance promises.
7. Payment and delivery terms
Ask about payment terms from the start. With us a deposit is taken when the order is confirmed and the remaining balance is paid on delivery. Insured shipping is used for international buyers. Payment and shipping terms should be in writing and should not change after the order.
8. Communication and transparency
A manufacturer that answers your questions clearly and on time shows the same transparency during production. Ask to see matters such as price, quantity and delivery plan in a written quote. You can reach us through the quote form or at info@oskasilver.com.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a manufacturer only by the lowest price.
- Skipping the sample and going straight to series production.
- Leaving confidentiality and payment terms verbal.
- Not asking about stone certificates and karat hallmarks.
Quick checklist
- Is it a direct manufacturer, and is a workshop visit possible?
- Does every product carry a karat hallmark?
- Do the stones come with certificates such as GIA/IGI?
- Is the sample policy in writing?
- Is there design confidentiality and an NDA option?
- Are payment and insured shipping terms clear?
Conclusion
A good manufacturer is transparent, verifiable and puts things in writing. At OSKA we run our contract jewelry manufacturing, private label and custom design production services on these principles. For more questions, see our frequently asked questions page.
