Which Diamond Cut Should You Choose for a Ring? Round, Oval, Cushion and More
On a diamond ring, the question "which cut" starts with the shape of the stone, but it does not end there. The cut also decides how the ring sits, how the stone is set and how it wears day to day.
Shape and cut quality are not the same thing
Cut has two meanings: the shape of the stone (round, oval and so on) and the cut quality (proportions, symmetry, polish). Sparkle depends largely on cut quality. Shape is a matter of design and taste. Cut quality is written on the stone's certificate; the certificate belongs to the stone, not to the ring.
Popular shapes
- Round: returns light evenly and suits every design.
- Oval: sparkles close to round and makes the finger look longer.
- Cushion: soft corners and a classic look.
- Emerald: a stepped cut that shows clean lines and the clarity of the stone more than sparkle.
- Pear: a drop shape; the direction of the point defines how the ring sits.
Effect on stone setting
On shapes with corners or points (pear, princess) the tips are protected with prongs, because these points are sensitive to impact. Round and oval shapes give more freedom in setting. The seat is drawn at the CAD stage to match the size of the chosen stone.
Gold, lab-grown diamond, natural diamond
The same cut and the same model can be made in 14K or 18K gold with a lab-grown diamond or a natural diamond. The choice of shape does not depend on the type of stone. How to decide
Think first of daily use, then the hand, and last the design. If you have a reference image, send it; we will settle the model together and approve it with a sample. For a quote, tell us the piece, the quantity and the country: use the quote form or write to info@oskasilver.com.
