What Is the Difference Between Lab-Grown Diamond and Moissanite?
Lab-grown diamond and moissanite can look alike in a display case, but they are different stones. You should always see clearly in the product information which one you are choosing.
Material
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond grown in a controlled environment. It is made of carbon and has the same crystal structure as a natural diamond. Moissanite is a separate mineral made of silicon carbide. The moissanite stones used in jewelry are generally produced in a laboratory.
Sparkle
Moissanite bends light with double refraction; under magnification the lower edges of the stone appear doubled. Its sparkle can show more coloured flashes. The sparkle of a diamond is more neutral and white.
Hardness
Both are very hard stones. On the Mohs scale diamond is at the very top; moissanite sits slightly below it. Either can be used in everyday jewelry.
Documents and telling them apart
Simple thermal testers can confuse the two stones; a specialist instrument is needed to separate them. Diamond reports from laboratories such as IGI and GIA are issued only for diamonds, and they belong to the stone, not the jewelry. Moissanite must not be presented as a diamond.
Which one in production?
Moissanite and lab-grown diamond can be set in the same model in 14K or 18K gold; the name of the stone is always stated clearly.
