How Low MOQ Jewelry Manufacturing Works

For a new brand or a small boutique, the biggest question is often: does a manufacturer work with small quantities? A low minimum order quantity (low MOQ) is set not by a single rule but by the structure of the product. In this article we explain the logic; exact figures vary by model, so they are confirmed in writing at the quotation stage.

Why does a minimum order quantity exist?

Jewelry manufacturing requires shared preparation for every model: preparing the design in a CAD environment, making the model ready for production, casting, stone setting and surface work. This preparation is done whether for one piece or for a series. The minimum quantity exists so that this fixed labor is shared reasonably.

Factors that affect low quantities

  • Complexity of the model: multi-part or heavily stone-set products need more workmanship
  • Stone type and sourcing: obtaining diamonds, lab-grown diamonds or colored stones
  • Choice of metal and karat
  • Surface, plating and branding needs
  • Size and color options of the same model

How should a small brand start?

Starting with a few well-chosen models is often healthier than a wide but shallow collection. Order a sample first, review the product, then move to the series. A small capsule collection with a shared design language keeps both production and story tidy. For the steps of building a brand, see our jewelry brand building guide.

Ready stock and made-to-order production

Only Panther and Melis are in ready stock; every other product is made from scratch to order. So a low-quantity order goes through the same preparation steps. For the process, read our made-to-order production article.

Effect on unit cost

When quantity falls, the fixed preparation labor is divided among fewer pieces, so unit cost generally falls as the series grows. We give no prices in this article. Ways to reduce cost include simplifying the model, offering the same design in a few sizes, and reviewing the number of stones.

Questions to ask the manufacturer

  • Is there a minimum quantity for this model, and what determines it?
  • Is the sample paid, and is the fee deducted if it becomes an order?
  • Can I take the same model in a few sizes or colors?
  • Will my design be produced for others? (Customer-specific designs are never produced for others; an NDA is signed on request.)
  • What is the payment plan? (A deposit at order confirmation, the balance on delivery.)

Sample process

Samples are paid; if an order is placed, the amount paid is deducted from the order total. For a small series, approving the sample is the most practical way to prevent errors from multiplying.
