How to Choose a Gold Jewelry Manufacturer in Istanbul: A B2B Buyer's Checklist
Istanbul has been a jewelry trading and manufacturing center for centuries, and the Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) is still its best-known address. For a brand, retailer or independent jeweler, that history means plenty of choice. It also means you need a clear way to compare manufacturers. This checklist covers what matters when you source gold jewelry from Istanbul.
1. Karat range and metal options
Start by confirming which gold standards the manufacturer works in. 9K (37.5% gold), 10K (41.7%), 14K (58.5%) and 18K (75%) behave differently in price, color and durability. 14K and 18K are common for fine jewelry, while 9K and 10K suit lower price points. A good manufacturer will explain the trade-offs for your product rather than push one karat. Ask about gold color options (yellow, white, rose) and whether sterling silver (925) is available if you want a lower-priced line.
2. Design support: CAD and prototyping
If you are bringing your own designs, check whether the workshop can turn sketches or reference images into production-ready CAD models. Ask about dimensions, stone seats, mechanisms such as clasps and hinges, and weight control. Clear CAD work before sampling saves time and avoids costly changes later. See our overview of jewelry CAD design and prototyping.
3. Sampling before production
Always request a sample before committing to a larger order. A sample lets you judge the real finish, weight, stone setting and comfort. Agree in advance what the sample will cost, how long it will take, and what you can change after seeing it. At OSKA, one paid sample is made per model and its cost is deducted if it becomes an order; production orders start from at least 1 kg.
4. Stone setting and finishing
Many pieces fail on small details: loose stones, uneven prongs, rough edges, inconsistent plating. Ask who does the stone setting and finishing and whether it happens in the same workshop. Finishing options such as polishing, rhodium plating and black rhodium change the look of a piece, so ask for examples. Read more about stone setting, plating and finishing.
5. Natural and lab-grown diamonds
If your line includes diamonds, confirm whether the manufacturer works with natural stones, lab-grown diamonds, or both, and what certification is available (for example IGI or GIA reports). Certified stones make it easier to explain value to your own customers.
6. Private label and your own branding
Many brands want their own name on the product and paperwork. Ask whether the manufacturer supports private label production, how branding such as stamps and hallmarks is handled, and whether confidentiality about your designs and suppliers is respected.
7. Communication and transparency
Response speed and clarity before you order usually predict how the relationship will go afterwards. A reliable partner answers technical questions directly, tells you early if a design is not practical to produce, and gives you a clear written quotation. Be cautious of anyone who avoids specifics about metal, weight, stones or timing.
8. Visit or verify
If possible, visit the workshop or arrange a video call and ask to see work in progress. Check that the company is a registered business, and ask for references or examples of past production.
