Lab-Grown Diamond Jewelry Manufacturing: A Guide for Brands

Colorless pear-cut lab-grown diamond three-stone ring in white gold

Lab-grown diamonds have moved from a niche to a regular part of many fine jewelry collections. For brands, they open new design possibilities: larger centre stones, fuller pavé and the option to offer the same model in natural and lab-grown versions. But producing lab-grown diamond jewelry well still depends on the same fundamentals as any fine jewelry: a sound design, a precise mould, careful stone setting and consistent finishing.

This guide walks brands through lab-grown diamond jewelry manufacturing step by step, from stone choice to production terms, based on how we work at OSKA Fine Jewelry in Istanbul's Grand Bazaar.

What is a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It has the same chemical composition, hardness and optical properties as a mined diamond; the difference is that it is grown in a controlled environment rather than formed underground. It should not be confused with simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite, which are different materials. Lab-grown diamonds are graded with the same criteria as natural diamonds: cut, colour, clarity and carat.

The term varies by market. In Turkish it is lab pırlanta or laboratuvar pırlantası, in French diamant de laboratoire and in German Labordiamant. Whatever the name, the stone should always be clearly identified as lab-grown in product information.

Why brands add lab-grown diamond lines

  • Design freedom: larger or higher-grade stones for the same budget make bolder designs practical.
  • Two-tier collections: the same model can be offered with natural and lab-grown stones.
  • Consistency: matched stone sizes and qualities are easier to plan across a collection, which matters for tennis bracelets and eternity bands.
  • Coloured options: fancy-colour lab-grown diamonds (pink, yellow, blue) allow statement pieces such as those in our lab-grown diamond collection.

Choosing the metal

Gold: 9K, 10K, 14K and 18K

Most lab-grown diamond fine jewelry is set in gold. 18K suits high-end pieces and larger stones; 14K offers a strong balance of durability and colour for everyday wear; 9K and 10K are used in some export markets and entry ranges. White gold with rhodium makes colourless stones look whiter, while yellow and rose gold give a warmer look. See gold jewelry manufacturing.

925 sterling silver

Sterling silver with rhodium plating is a lighter option for lab-grown diamond collections in a broader price segment. Black rhodium plating can be used for dark, high-contrast designs.

The manufacturing process

1. Design

Start with your sketch, CAD file, photo or a sample. At this stage we fix stone sizes and shapes, the setting style, karat and colour, dimensions, target weight and the position of your logo. Stone seats are calculated in CAD to the exact stone size; this is what makes setting secure later. See CAD design and prototyping.

2. Mould

A production mould is made from the approved model so every piece matches. For a new model, the mould fee is deducted from your order.

3. Sample

A sample is produced and set with stones for your approval. You check weight, proportions, stone appearance, finish and logo. Samples are charged; if the sample turns into an order, the sample fee is deducted.

4. Production

Casting, assembly, stone setting, plating and polishing follow the approved sample, and each piece is inspected for stone security, finish, clasps and dimensions before delivery.

Setting techniques for lab-grown diamonds

Because lab-grown diamonds have the same hardness as natural diamonds, they are set with the same techniques:

  • Prong: maximises light; classic for solitaires.
  • Pavé and micro-pavé: small stones cover the surface for continuous sparkle.
  • Channel: stones sit between two walls; ideal for eternity and wedding bands.
  • Bezel: a metal rim protects the stone; popular in men's jewelry and everyday pieces.

More on finishing: stone setting, plating and finishing.

Stone sourcing

We can source lab-grown diamonds to your specified size, colour and clarity range, or work with stones you supply. Stone specifications are agreed at quotation stage so the sample and production match the same range.
