Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: Differences, Price and Value

Lab-grown and natural diamonds are the same material: carbon in a diamond crystal structure. The difference is where they come from. This guide compares them on the points buyers and jewelry brands ask about most.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. They have the same chemical composition, hardness (10 on the Mohs scale) and optical properties as mined diamonds. Gemological labs such as IGI and GIA grade both with the same 4Cs. A lab-grown diamond is not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite.

How they are made

Lab-grown diamonds are produced with HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) or CVD (chemical vapor deposition). Both methods grow a rough crystal that is then cut and polished like a natural stone.

Price

A lab-grown diamond usually costs much less than a natural diamond of the same size and grade, so the same budget buys a larger or higher-grade stone. Natural diamonds are rarer and tend to hold value better in the resale market; lab-grown diamonds are bought mainly for beauty and value at purchase.

Quality and certification

Both are graded on cut, colour, clarity and carat. A lab-grown stone should come with an IGI or GIA report that states it is laboratory grown. Always check that the report number matches the stone.

Ethics and traceability

Lab-grown diamonds have a known origin and no mining. Their environmental footprint depends on the energy used to grow them, so ask the supplier how the stones are produced.

Which one is right for you?

  • Larger stone for the budget: lab-grown.
  • Traceable origin, modern positioning: lab-grown.
  • Rarity and long-term resale value: natural.

For jewelry brands

The same design can be offered in both natural and lab-grown diamonds, in 10k, 14k and 18k gold or 925 silver. OSKA manufactures both in Istanbul with samples and series production. Request a quote or read our guides on metals for lab-grown diamond jewelry and engagement rings and tennis bracelets.
